Big prizes at Vijaya Hockey sevens
The Vijaya Open All-Island Inter-Club Hockey Sevens conducted by Vijaya Sports Club will get underway at Matale on November 10 and 11.
The 14th edition of this tournament will have two main categories for men and women and a special segment for veterans of the age category of over 45.
Bernard Aluvihare Stadium, Edward Park and Astro Turf in Matale are the venues for the much looked forward hockey fiesta in the hill country played for the Old Vijayans Challenge Cup for men and the V.T. Nanayakkara Memorial Trophy for the women.
The matches will be conducted on a league cum knockout format and the semi-finals and finals will be worked off at the Astro Turf on Sunday, November 11.
According to the Secretary of Vijaya Sports Club, Major B.G.R. Fernando, the winners will receive challenge trophies, replicas and cash prize of rupees 50,000 for men, rupees 25,000 for women and rupees 5,000 for men over 45. The runners-up are also entitled to receive rupees 25,000 for men, rupees 10,000 for women and rupees 2,500 for the veterans.
Air Force Sports Club leads the series by winning the men’s title on five occasions and Seetha Devi Sports Club Kandy alone has won the women’s title on eight occasions, which remains the highest so far.
