Dilroy takes the 50th run
View(s):The whistle still talks for Dilroy Fernando who celebrates his 50th Birthday today. Dilroy is a very much known personality who has given around 35 years of his life for rugby and still continues to serve the game. Whilst being virtually married to rugby since recent times he has been involved in promoting American Football in Sri Lanka.
Having started the game at Isipathana he continued his rugby at CR and FC and he represented Sri Lanka during the height of his playing days. Following his playing career he contributed to the development of the game at Isipathana and also took up to active refereeing and is still active at the premier games at school and club rugby.
He also contributed by being involved with the SLRFU and was its CEO and at present is the Secretary of the Western Province Rugby Football Union. He was also the President of the Rugby Referees Society of Sri LankaHe has also refereed in the Asian Region and was a match official in the Rugby World Sevens Series played in Dubai. His contribution to rugby in Sri Lanka and the region includes being an educator and a coaching match official and is also a member and selector of the ARFU referees committee.
His involvement in sport and more in rugby has been the cornerstone in his fifty years. With many more years of contribution ahead he says “So, I’ve now passed my 50th birthday … apparently, the term for someone in their 50s is Old. I like the 50 as it sounds quite grand as I still run around the field with a whistle in hand. The boys stop for my whistle and the birds fly away.”
