Kandy Sports club felicitates 2012 rugby squad
After a long hard season Kandy Sports Club all most achieved everything what was on offer on the field. They just missed out on one that was the Inter Club League Trophy which was at their club house at Nittawela for the last 11 long years. But they played with lot of power and energy and took sweet revenge from the team whom they lost the league to, that was the Havies. Kandy Sports Club retained the Clifford Cup Knock out trophy for the last 6 years.
Malik Samarawickrama Kandy SC trustee with his fine gesture did not forget the players who not only won trophies after trophies but also brought glory and honour for the Up Country when he hosted the players, parents, sponsors and the Media. The management was rock solid at Kandy SC which helped the Boys to complete their duty on the field. Their Head Coach and cool headed Ireland born Johan Taylor took the team in to winning habits from the day he came in to the country. He came in 2007 and won 6 Clifford Cups and 5 League titles along with some sevens victories under his belt. He missed out only 1 league title which was this year. As per things standing at present it looks like Taylor will end his coaching stint with Kandy SC after 6 long years and very likely to take over as the Head Coach at Royal College.
President of the Kandy SC Dr Sarath Kapuwatte speaking to the Sunday Times said that “we are very thankful to the sponsors Cargills, Etisalat and Singer Sri Lanka. Without their support we wouldn’t be able to come our journey this far. We also paid our overseas players through this along with other commitments and looked after the boys. We will be focused and ready to face the challenge in the coming years he ended.
“Malik Samarawickrama who pulled himself out from CR & FC and came to Kandy SC two decades ago said that we have to be watchful as all the other clubs are narrowing the gap with us. Our boys are committed and well discipline lot on and off the field and have given the dividends for the sponsors which were expected at the time of sponsorship. Malik ended by thanking the hard working Kandy committee behind Kandy success and paid tribute to the die hard Kandy spectators who were in numbers when ever Kandy played either in Kandy or Colombo.Roshan Weeraratne won the award for the best player in 2012 while schoolboy Danushka Dayan won the best youngster award.
