View(s):A new safari resort is due to open in Udawalawe during the current winter season with hopes of attracting holidaymakers from Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and the Far East.
The 4-star holiday resort named “Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort” with 55 rooms that includes four suites is built on a seven acre land on the Thanamalvila Road in close proximity to the National Park and the Udawalawe tank, the hotel’s management told the media at a briefing held in Colombo recently.
It was noted that the hotel’s total investment was at Rs.750 million that was jointly provided by its board of Directors totaling Rs.300 million and the rest borrowed from the Bank of Ceylon.
Using solar energy for heating purposes, the kitchen of the hotel is also provided with solar energy and sewage treatment system is also established and waste water is converted to irrigate the gardens.
The hotel is owned by Rosen Lanka and is the brainchild of the Environmental Laboratary Services Group of Companies, the main shareholder. A former politician in the area Ananda Kularatne, who is also an exporter, is also part of the Board of Directors.
Initially, the hotel hopes to attract locals since they believe it would be difficult to attract customers for the current winter season.
The resort intends on attracting guests following its engagement with key travel agents and in this respect, it has been able to ensure at least 20 per cent occupancy for this season.
In the second phase of the project, the hotel also hopes to provide Ayurvedic services for the discerning traveler, the hotel authorities said.
