Employment opportunities for unemployed youth in Nuwara Eliya
View(s):Berendina Employment Centre (BEC), a unit of the Berendina Development Services (Gte) Ltd, recently conducted a “Job Fair and Vocational Promotion Programme” in Nuwara Eliya.
In a media statement, BEC said this was its biggest job fair so far and was organised in collaboration with the Vocational Training Authority of Sri Lanka’s Nuwara Eliya division.
The fair attracted over 1800 participants unemployed youth from plantations and rural areas. The objective was to link unemployed youth in plantations and remote rural villages with prospective employers and vocational training providers.
Some 20 well known establishments, including Dialog, Keells Super, Union Assurance, Ceylon Knit Trend (Pvt) Ltd, Mass Active Contourine, Brandix Intimate Apparel, Etisalat, LIC Lanka Ltd, Oracle Manpower Supply DPL Group Of Companies, AT Services (Pvt) Ltd, Rosalia Diamond (Pvt) Ltd and Krishanthi Manpower Consultants took part in the event hiring required employees to their respective establishments. Out of a total 1842 participants, 645 were males and 1197 were females; 84 were recruited on the spot whilst a large number was short listed for second interviews.
The youth also had the opportunities to get them enrolled in many vocational training programmes through the career guidance given by representatives from vocational training institutions including VTA, NAITA, Technical College, The Future Key, Youth Corps, British College of Applied Studies, ATB Associates and GDITVS.
BEC, set up in 2002, has 10 branches in five districts. Its mission is to find productive employment to unemployed youth as well as to assist employers to find suitable employees at a minimal cost.
Since 2002, BEC was able to provide over 10,000 employment opportunities in over 280 reputed and well-known establishments, placing skilled and semi skilled youth including technical and scientific fields. The organization is also instrumental in providing over 6,000 training and vocational scholarships to youth in areas such as use of computer courses, secretarial ship, electronics, welding, etc where employers can guarantee employment.
“This training is provided by reputed training institutes with the training expenses paid by BEC costing up to a Rs. 10,000 per person. No fees are taken from youth for these services by Berendina,” the statement said.
