Sathosa Motors imports Isuzu buses

Sathosa Motors plc is now importing Isuzu luxury and standard buses for Sri Lankan markets, which in turn will contribute to the bottom line of the company, its Executive Director Tilak Gunasekera said.

He noted that this decision is as a result of the waiver of duty and VAT on buses in the 2012 budget. The company is also hoping to increase its market share further with Isuzu having acquired a new plant in India.

The company has already imported four 40 and 30 -seater luxury buses from India and imports will increase with the demand, Mr. Gunasekera said. With the rapid development and modernization taking place in the Colombo Metropolitan area, it is essential to operate a new luxury bus service replacing the old bus fleet, he said, adding that Sathosa Motors is gearing up for a slice of the pie.

Rapid economic development, an ageing fleet of public transport buses and the sharp rise in population across the country’s main cities has meant that existing public transport infrastructure is grossly overused and inadequate, he said.

The government has now embarked on a programme to modernize the public transport infrastructure, with plans to import 3000 buses from China an important part of which will be replacing the existing buses that ply on Sri Lankan roads.
