Cigarette pack pics to burn into smokers’ conscience

View(s):

The new tobacco products labeling and packaging regulations which require cigarette packs sold in Sri Lanka to depict graphic, pictorial anti-smoking messages, will come into operation on March 1, 2013.

All cigarette packs will have to carry one of eight pictures depicting illnesses caused by smoking, such as cancer, myocardial infarction, stroke etc., as have been finalised by the National Alcohol and Tobacco Authority (NATA).

The new cigarette pack covers were finalised by NATA, in keeping with the guidelines of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) adopted in 2003. Sri Lanka signed and ratified the Convention the same year, and the Convention entered into force in 2005.
