Last week teacher trade unions and Education Ministry officials met for discussions but failed to agree on salaries and other issues, while some teachers threatened to go on strike again.

Representatives of 16 trade unions met Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena, Deputy Minister Wijayamuni Zoysa, MP Mohan Lal Grero and Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Jayaratne .

Joseph Stalin, president of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), told the Sunday Times that the unions will go on an islandwide token strike on December 4.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena told the Sunday Times that the teachers could submit a proposal covering promotions, salaries and competitive exams and submit it in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, frustrated teachers are asking why the government is not adjusting teacher salaries if it could give tax concessions for the import of racing cars.

“Teachers are responsible for the four million students in this country, and they should be given due respect and their grievances should be addressed,” said Mahinda Jayasinghe, General Secretary, Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union. “If the government can allocate Rs. 290 billion for defence and city beautification, why can’t it allocate more for education?”

“In his budget speech, the President talked about giving shoes and extra uniforms for students of schools in remote areas. He makes no mention of facilities for the other four million students,” said Joseph Stalin, president of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union.
