Sri Lanka’s most experienced women pugilist Anusha Kodituwakku bid adieu to boxing by grabbing a gold medal at the Eight Nation Women’s International Boxing Championship concluded at Tunis City in Tunisia on Friday.

Anusha making her last appearance in an international boxing meet ended her campaign in style when she defeated the Finland champion Loikkanen Lotta in the final of the flyweight under 45kg bout to win the gold.

Incidentally Lotta was much more experienced than Anusha and had participated at the London Olympics recently. Earlier Anusha qualified to the final by overcoming host country — Tunisia’s Malek Wertani in the semi final with a 14-4 decision in favour of her.

The three member women’s team had a successful ending with the other two boxers Sithari Sandareka and Shiromali Weerakoon winning bronze medals. Sithari contesting in the bantamweight under 54kgs was unfortunate to lose to Norway’s Mariel Hanson in the semi final while Shiromali too underwent the same fate in the middleweight under 75kg semi final bout where she lost to an Egyptian boxer.

The five day boxing meet which began on November 12 saw the participation of eight countries which included Egypt, Hungary, Sri Lanka, Poland, Finland, Serbia, Algeria, Morocco and host Tunisia. Two of the boxers are from MAS Holdings with Anusha representing Slimline BC and Sithari is attached to MAS Southern while Shiromali who did well recently by winning a bronze medal at the 6th Asian Women’s Boxing Championship by defeating Thailand’s national champion in the quarter final is a member of Police BC.

The three boxers were coached by former Sri Lanka flyweight national champion Harsha Kumara. Dian Gomes who was responsible in Sri Lanka’s revival of boxing in recent times accompanied the team as the manager which no doubt would have given the boxers the much needed confidence to achieve the feat of bagging a gold and two bronze medals.
