Joes and Petes share annual tie honours
St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s Colleges were declared joint champions of the Stanley De Silva Challenge Trophy, after their 23rd annual football fixture had to be called off recently due to bad light.
The match was played at the CR and FC grounds with St. Peter’s being the host team.
The decision to declare both teams joint champions was taken by the Football Committees of both colleges. When the match was called off neither side had crossed the other’s goal line. It was a battle between the Josephian forwards and the Peterite defenders. St. Peter’s captain, Supun Ranasinghe won the award for the best player of his side, while Anurudha Herath, the Peterite goalkeeper, was the man of the match. The best player in the Josephian team was Anton Perera, the side’s vice captain and centre forward.
The inaugural fixture was played back in 1989 at the Sugathadasa Stadium when the Josephians became the first winners by one goal to nil. However, St. Peter’s got their revenge the following year with a 2-0 win at Henry Pedris Park.
St. Peter’s College lead the field with 13 wins to the Josephians’ 10, while the match was not played in 1992 due to unavoidable circumstances. (BM)
