Lyceum International School, Wattala notched up a second successive inter-international schools swimming title, as they tore past all opposition to register an emphatic final tally of 1139 points, after two days of competition at the Sugathadasa pool.

They were well ahead of their closest challengers, Lyceum Nugegoda, who finished with 1091 points. Lyceum Wattala’s swimmers secured an early lead of 72 points at the end of day one, courtesy of a series of strong performances from several of their junior swimmers, followed by a number of steady swims from their seniors.

Asian International School (AIS), who had finished the first day off in third position, were unable to overtake LIS Nugegoda on the final day, despite possessing a team blessed with a raft of gifted swimmers.

They displayed all this talent with a surge of scintillating swimming from Ali Ishpahani, Mathew Abeysinghe, Shehan Rajapaksha, Machiko Raheem and Kimiko Raheem.

Their dominance yielded several meet records in the pool with Machiko establishing record timings in the 200 meter individual medley and 100 meter freestyle events; Mathew raising the bar in the 50 meter butterfly and the 200 meter freestyle events and Ishpahani registering a new record time in the 50 meter breaststroke, the 100 meter freestyle and the 50 meter freestyle swims.
As a result they claimed several individual prizes, with Ishpahani named Best Swimmer in the 16 and over age category and Machiko claiming the 16 and over girls age group top swimmer tag.

In the 16 and under category for the boys, Dillon Abeysinghe and Rajapaksha shared the best swimmer honours. The tournament, organized by AIS, saw the participation of 350 swimmers from 19 international schools across the island, and was worked off on November 10 and 11.
