The St. Sylvester’s Cricket team is a difficult unit to beat, not least for their fighting qualities. Their Big Match rivals have found this out on a few occasions. This year’s team is young and balanced. The salient feature about them is that they have a lot of cricket ahead of them.

Rain has interfered with their plans and upto now they have played only two games. They had a bad game against the Rajans, but recovered their poise against the Anthonians and would have taken the lead but for the rain.

Dushan Malalasena, a fourth year player, Captains the side. An attacking left hander and a quickish right arm leg spinner, he has yet to play to his full potential. The Sylvestrian camp hopes that day is not for off.

The leading all rounder is small-made Sumedha Dissanaike. A good left arm spinner, he has taken a six wicket bag and a five wicket one already. He bats well and times the ball nicely. He scored a century last season. A good fielder anywhere.

Tall and elegant, Hansamal Perera is the team’s outstanding batsman. He plays straight, drives well and is capable of long knocks. He made 58 and 20 against Dharmaraja and 41 not out against the Anthonians. He bowls off spin.

Leftarm spinner Nimesha Mendis took around 90 wickets last season. Another big haul is expected of him. He bats usefully and defiantly.

Opener Indunil Samarananda is a key player. A solid batsman, he has to be prised out. He takes wickets consistently with his off breaks. The other opener Akalanka Dissanaike has to be dug out. He has made runs, grittily.

Harsha Vedikkara, a free scoring batsman, also opens the bowling. Left armer Ashan Baranmali partners Vedikkara with the new ball.

Besides their usual games, the Sylvestrians have tournament matches against St. Benedict’s, Nalanda, Joseph Vaz, D.S. Senanayake, Lumbini, Issipathana, St. Peter’s and St. Aloysius.

Former Sylvestrian cricketer and Kandy Youth Captain Roland Perera continues as coach. Sankalpa Gunasekera, also a Sylvestrian and Kandy Youth player, is the assistant coach.
