Vidyartha rugby ban revoked
The Executive Committee of the Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has decided revoke the one year ban imposed against Vidyartha College Kandy, after meeting yesterday, the sports body’s Secretary revealed.
This was consequent to appeals made by the school requesting that the previous decision be reconsidered after a ban was imposed on Vidyartha earlier in July from participating in any Under-20 rugby tournaments. They were asked to start again in Division II Group C category after the ban after events with regard to this issue started early in the season when Isipathana College lodged a complaint with the authorities. Isipathana alleged that Vidyartha had fielded an overage player.
The one-year ban has been removed and Vidyartha has been allowed to commence playing in Division II A from next season. It has been also decided that the junior teams will take part in the Division I.
The season continued despite Isipathana’s discontent with the action taken by the SLSRFA. Thereafter upon complaints, the Ministry of Education conducted investigations into the matter and in a surprise turn of events, Vidyartha authorities pleaded guilty for fielding a player who impersonated another senior member by falsifying documents such as the National Identity Card. In another turn of events D.S. Senanayake has raised an objection against St. Anthony’s, who fielded a player that had been sent off with a red card and, as per schools tournament rules, has to automatically serve a ban of two matches. The contention of D.S. Senanayake is that the schools section has released the player from serving the ban and the issue has not been subject to a disciplinary inquiry.
