Annual Prize Giving of St.Aloysius’ College – A huge success
The Annual Prize Giving of St.Aloysius’ College was held on 9th of November, 2012. The Secretary of Defense and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Chief Guest at this prestigious event.
Upon arrival at the school, the Defense Secretary was ceremonially welcomed by the Principal Mr. D.P.L.S. Gunasekara.
St. Aloysius’ College is one of the leading boys’ schools in the Southern Province. The college was established in 1895 by Jesuit fathers. St. Aloysius’ College is a National School, which provides primary and secondary education.
Until the Sri Lankan government brought legislation for nationalization of schools in the island St. Aloysius’ College was run by Jesuit Fathers and the medium of teaching was English. The first Buddhist Principal was appointed in 1971 and subsequently the medium of teaching was changed to Sinhala. The college today provides education to 3900 students from grade 1 to grade 13. The school has earned a reputation in the areas of academic excellence as well as in sports.
Among the event Secretary Defense also laid the foundation stone for a proposed Auditorium building which will be built by the Civil
Defense Department and funded by the Past Pupils’ Association of the school.
Speaking at the event Secretary of Defense stated ” to be a good leader, the students should develop their talents not only in education but also in extra-curricular activities too. Engage in such extracurricular activities at the school will produce a future generation with good leadership qualities”.
Explaining the importance of extracurricular activities he said that many candidates who apply for the General Sir John Kothalawa Defence University (KDU) disqualify as of lack exposure in extra-curricular activities even though they have good educational qualifications.
He also said that after the elimination of scourge terrorism under the leadership of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the students can now engage in their education without any hesitation.
Secretary of Defence presented the children with awards and certificates for their outstanding performances in academic and extracurricular activities.
Religious dignitaries, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Mr. Chandima Weerakkodi, Member of Parliament Mr. Mohan De Silva, Mayor of Galle Mr. Methsiri De Silva, Mr. Dilith Jayaweera, education officials, members of the school staff, past pupils and a large number of students and their parents were invited to this occasion as special invitees.
