IESL Centre, Central Province holds AGM
View(s):ICT enabled connectivity will bring IESL to its members – states President, IESL The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) Centre, Central Province held its Annual General Meeting on Friday, 9th Nov, 2012 at Kandy in the presence of a large gathering of its members, distinguished guests and special invitees. Eng. Tilak De Silva, President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, the parent body of the Centre was the Chief Guest.
The IESL is the premier professional body for the engineering profession in the country. Its vision is to be among the leading professional institutions and
a Centre of Excellence and Leadership in the field of Engineering and Technology in Asia. The IESL head office is in Colombo while the IESL Centres which are the provincial arms of the institution help extend membership services to engineers serving in their respective provinces. The Central Province, being host to some of the mega infrastructure development projects undertaken by the government like the Accelerated Mahaweli project and also being the epicenter of the Tea Plantation Sector of the country has a vast number of engineers belonging to all disciplines of the profession serving in it and whose professional need have to be met by the IESL Centre of the province Speaking at the occasion Eng. Tilak De Silva declared that the IESL is at a turning point in its history and that the new sessions will bring about phenomenal changes in the way it operates with the help of present day Information and Communication Technology (ICT)to bring the institution to the members with vastly improved connectivity. He vowed that, as a result, many more functions of IESL Head Office could now be devolved to the IESL Centres at the provincial level and perhaps even to the district level in the future.
Eng. A.M. Kumaratunga. CEng. MIE (SL)was elected as Chairman at this AGM and will steer the Centre during
the new sessions. He has graduated from the Faculty of Engineering University of Peradeniya in 1987.
Thereafter, in the same year he joined the Road Development Authority where he is working up to date
having served as Engineer, Resident Engineer, Executive Engineer, Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer (Projects)
& Project Director of Deyata Kirula road project (Monaragala & Anuradapura).Presently he is the Provincial
Director of Central Province and the Project Director of Deyata Kirula Road Project at Ampara.
Other office bearers elected at the AGM were Eng. A.B.Illangakoon (Vice Chairman), Eng.W.A.M Wijepala (Secretary), Eng. (Mrs) Y. Tennakoon (Assistant Secretary),Eng. R.M.P Rathnayake(Treasurer) and Dr. Kamalanath Samarakoon (Editor). Meanwhile Eng. N.UK Ranatunga, Eng R.M.A.C.B Rathnayake, Eng J.U Sanajeewa Perera, Eng Dharaka Witana, Eng. W.R.M.U Wickremasinghe and Eng Suresh Kumara were elected as Committee Members. In addition Eng. S.M Kunarasinghe, Eng. (Mrs) Indrani Wijewardana, Eng. (Mrs)Kumuduni Deera and Eng. Tissa Gopallawa were elected as Co-opted Members of the Centre.
