The University and the Faculty: making history count
View(s):The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the leading members of the Sri Lankan university system, which has originated from the Pirivena tradition in Sri Lanka. In fact, the history of the University dates back to the 1880s and is embedded in the scholarly tradition of the Vidyodaya Pirivena at Maligakanda, which was established by the Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero in 1883. This Pirivena was upgraded to university status in 1959 as the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon. As part and parcel of these historical developments, the Venerable Weliwitiye Sri Soratha Thero, the founder of the Vidyodaya University, ventured to commence management education at Vidyodaya, making the University the pioneering higher educational institution in Sri Lanka or probably in the Asian region, which offers degree programmes in the discipline of Management. At the beginning, the academic responsibilities of the degree programmes in Management came under two academic departments, the Departments of Business Administration and of Management Studies, which were then affiliated to the Faculty of Arts. However, in view of the growing popularity of these degree programmes, the University decided to establish a separate faculty for Management education. And in the year 1972 the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce was established as the pioneering management faculty in the Sri Lankan university system.
The Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce
In its illustrious history of 52 years of academic excellence, the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce has spearheaded the development of management education in Sri Lanka through its programmes designed to meet the needs of wider Sri Lankan society as well as of Sri Lanka’s corporate sector. Strengthened by twelve academic departments, at present the Faculty offers globally competitive degrees in the broad areas of Management and Commerce. Indeed, for the last four decades, the Faculty has been the most popular faculty, particularly among the students who have excelled in Advanced Level in the Commerce Stream. Yet, the Faculty’s role in Sri Lankan higher education sector is not restricted to the undergraduate education. The Faculty is also committed to the Continuous Professional Development and the Lifelong Learning of the leaders in the World of Work. And it offers a range of highly recognized postgraduate programmes, including MBAs, MPA and M.Sc. in Management. The Faculty has a long established research culture and offers a pedagogical sphere heightened by cutting-edge research with a rare combination of practical and theoretical knowledge. With this background the Faculty – in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University – is pleased to invite some “extraordinary” people to be a part of its newly introduced Doctoral Programme with a view to (re)reading the Philosophy of Management.
The Doctoral Programme
The Doctoral Programme is a 3 year full-time programme. The broad objectives of the Programme include the development of an indigenous body of knowledge on management practices in Sri Lanka, development of models or frameworks which are suitable for Sri Lankan organizational management, harnessing future scholarship in management, and the promotion of a culture conducive to high-quality research and scientific thinking in the public and private sector organizations in Sri Lanka. Indeed, to apply for a doctoral placement at the Faculty, the potential candidates must have either a Master’s degree in Management/ Commerce from a recognized university with research experience in the same field or any recognized postgraduate degree with evidence of research in Management. Along with the common facilities of the University and the Faculty, the selected candidates will also secure a place in the “Doctoral Research Centre” at the Sri Soratha Mandiraya of the University which is equipped with Internet, printing, photocopying and other facilities.
