Nithiya and Sajeewan take major honours
The Ping Pong Academy, in collaboration with the Jaffna District Table Tennis Association and the Vavuniya District Table Tennis Association, conducted three championships during the second weekend of November in Vavuniya.
T. Nithiya and Saharajah Sajeewan from Jaffna were the most successful paddlers of the three-event table tennis gala which were held on November 10
and 11. Nithiya of Urumpirai Hindu College, Jaffna clinched the Under-19 Girls Singles titles at the Jaffna District Junior and North and East Province which were held on the respective days. Sajeewan of Jaffna Central won the Under-19 Boys Singles championships at both events.
Nithiyia also competed in the Under-17 Girls Singles finals at both events and won the championship of the Jaffna District Junior. But she lost the event at the North and East Provinces to S. Nishanthi of Vavuniya District, who also won the Under-17 Girls Singles title at the Vavuniya District Junior Championship. Meanwhile Sajeewan had a shot to earn a double at the North and East Championship by entering the Under-17
Boys Singles final but lost to teammate Mohan Agashan, who went on to win the age category titles at both events. Mohan Agashan of Jaffna District won the Abans Challenge Trophy presented for the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
This was the very first time that a table tennis tournament reached Vavunia, attracting over 200 participants from the Jaffna and Vavuniya districts. The district tournaments for Jaffna and Vavuniya were separately held on November 10 at the Vavuniya Courts. The following day, on November 11, players who took part in both these events participated in the Northern and Eastern Provinces Table Tennis Championships held at the same venue. According to the Ping Pong Academy officials these two championships were held at the same venue for benefit of the players.
“If we had conducted one tournament in Jaffna the other tournament in Vavuniya valuable assets like money and time would have been just wasted,” an official stated.
Furthermore, according to the officials, the coaches from Northern and Eastern provinces have done a lot of ground work to take the sport among school-going youngsters, who turned up in numbers for the events. Taking into account the number of participants who competed this year, the organizers expect that the numbers will increase when they host the Northern and Eastern Provinces Table Tennis Championships in 2013. – NA
