Shenal Dias best rugby player of the year 2012
Former St. Peter’s College, Air force and present Havelocks SC second row forward Shenal Dias was judged as the Dialog Player of the year for 2012 at a colourful ceremony organized by the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) and the official sponsors of the National rugby team Dialog at Waters Edge Battaramulla.
Havelocks SC who won the League Trophy after three decades walked away with the Dialog Rugby League ‘A’ Division and Kandy SC won the runner-up trophy. But the Up Country team from Kandy SC got sweet revenge when they clinched the Clifford Cup beating Havelocks in the oldest trophy which was on offer which counts more than 100 years in the country.
Individual awards were given to each position for the very first time in Sri Lankan Rugby by considering each players performances in League and Knock out Tournament.
Best Prop Forward – Dushmantha Priyadarshana (Havelock Sports Club), Best Hooker – Namal Rajapaksa (Navy Sports Club), Best Lock – Shenal Dias (Havelock Sports Club), Best Flanker – Sudharshana Muthuthanthri (Havelock Sports Club), Best Number Eight – Diren Warnakulasuriya (Havelock Sports Club), Best Scrum-Half – Roshan Weeraratne (Kandy Sports Club), Best Fly-Half – Fazil Marija (Kandy Sports Club), Best Centre – Dinusha Fernando (Navy Sports Club), Best Wing Three Quarter – Mithun Hapugoda (Havelock Sports Club), Best Fullback – Mohamed Sheriff (Havelock Sports Club)
Most Tries Scorer (11) – Saliya Handapagangoda (Army Sports Club) and Sitiveni Kunaga (Army Sports Club), Best Goal Kicker (25 conversion and 12 penalties) – Upali Wickramasinghe (Army Sports Club), Best Coach – Imthisam Marikar (Upcountry Lions SC) Best Manager – Rajiv Perera (Havelock Sports Club), Overseas Player of the Year – Atul Nissan (Havelock Sports Club) and Most Promising Team – Upcountry Lions.
Future rugby Player of the Year and Rugby Player of the Year awards was the most looked forward in the awards ceremony.
The nominees for the Rugby Future Player of the Year were Heshan Silva (Kandy Sports Club), Shenal Dias (Havelock Sports Club), Mithun Hapugoda (Havelock Sports Club). Heshan Silva walked away with the prize. The nominees for the pinnacle in the award of the night, Dialog Rugby Player of the Year were; Shenal Dias (Havelock Sports Club), Sajith Saranga (Upcountry Lions), Saliya Handapangoda (Sri Lanka Army Sports Club) and this award was won by Shenal Dias.
Sri Lanka Sevens team which had a remarkable year winning Bronze at Borneo and then continued their good work in Shanghai, Mumbai and Singapore under Fazil Marija. For excellent Coaching former England Sevens sensation and National Head Coach Ben Gollings too received an award of appreciation for his great work in short span of time with the national sevens team.
