Sri Lanka spinner Jeewan Mendis guided Sampath Bank to a comfortable 120 runs win over John Keells in their Mercantile knockout cricket tournament quarter final encounter concluded at the Bloomfield ground in Reid Avenue yesterday.

Jeewan’s magnificent figures of 7 for 44 helped his side restrict John Keells chasing a formidable target of 267 runs for victory to a low score of 146.
Earlier in the day Sampath Bank being invited to take first lease of the wicket made a challenging score of 266 which came on the back of a fine knock of 77 by Thilina Kandamby who put on a valuable 79 runs stand for the third wicket with Hasantha Fernando. Thilina’s knock comprised five boundaries and three sixes while Hasantha made 30 and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with a useful knock of 39.

Malinda Warnapura along with Dilruwan Perera steered Unichela to a convincing six wicket win over ETI in their quarter final match played at the NCC ground yesterday. Malinda slammed an unbeaten 77 with five boundaries and three sixes while Dilruwan cracked a 65 with three boundaries and

four wickets as the pair put on an unbroken 121 runs for the fifth wicket enabling Unichela chasing 180 runs for victory to reach the target in the 38th over.

The quarter final match between Seylan Bank and HNB which got off to a late start with the game beginning past 12.00 noon due to the wet outfield from overnight rain saw HNB coasting to an easy seven wicket win. The match reduced to 36 overs saw Seylan Bank being restricted to a score of 155 while HNB in their run chase was guided by an opening stand of 87 runs between Saman Jayantha and Hashan Goonetilleke which enabled them reach the target in the 28th over.
