People’s verdict on provincial councils next Sunday

Mixed opinion is emerging on the need for Provincial Councils (PCs) in Sri Lanka, according to preliminary data collected under a joint BT-RCB poll on PCs. Results of the poll would be published next Sunday, December 9 in the Business Times. The poll is being held pursuant to the debate over the proposed repealing of the 13th amendment to the Constitution and thereby ending the era of provincial councils. The Colombo-based Research Consultancy Bureau (RCB), for the first time in the joint BT-RCB public polls’ exercise, is conducting the poll outside Colombo in the regions of Galle, Kandy, Badulla, Batticaloa and Jaffna, sections of which have been completed.

“We are getting mixed views where some favour the councils while others are critical. The data is being analysed,” noted RCB CEO and founder Ravi Bamunusinghe. Earlier the street responses in BT-RCB polls were confined to Colombo. On its part, the BT (Business Times) will send out a questionnaire tomorrow to its email data base asking people to respond to questions like has the PCs worked; and has it improved the lives of people and the community. More than a 1000 respondents would be covered in the comprehensive survey.
