Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) along with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Russia says it held a successful tourism promotional campaign in Kazakhastan coinciding with the state visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

During the campaign, special emphasis was laid onto promoting Sri Lankan culture and Ceylon tea products to the Kazakhastani tourism market, according to a Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) announcement.

During the promotional event in Kazakhastan, consumer based promotional activities were given the prime focus and the SLTPB initiated action to distribute tourism promotional materials at major shopping malls, whilst providing entertainment with Sri Lankan dancing performances, which proved to be highly popular among the Kazakhastani nationals.

Bhashwara Gunarathna, Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism was quoted in the statement as saying that the promotional campaign was initiated considering Kazakhastan as a potential tourist generating market for Sri Lanka. “We are planning to hold a major promotional campaign in Russia to attract more tourists to our country,” he said.

Kazakhastan is part of Eastern Europe and is categorized in the ‘others’ category of arrivals from Eastern Europe which showed a 26.7 per cent rise to 16,295 visitors to Sri Lanka in January to October 2012.

The country is a part of the former Soviet Republics. Russia in the meantime saw a 44.8 per cent increase to 18,955 arrivals in Sri Lanka in the same 10-month period.
