Another forty spellers secure a seat at the Spellmaster semi finals
View(s):Spellmaster continues to be one of the most influential edutainment programmes today. As mentioned by many observers Spellmaster is not just about winning the title; it’s also about personal improvement of one’s self, not only in vocabulary but also in speaking skills, listening skills, observation and personality.
The second and third of the 5 quarter finals were held over the past two weeks to select a set of 40 entrants to the top 100.
The competition this time around involves the contestants picking two numbers from a random number generator and the corresponding word given to them in the first round, leaving them more anxious than ever.
Out of 100 competitors per competition from every part of Sri Lanka, selecting 20 from each was not an easy task. Every contestant got onto the stage with the only hope of getting qualified to the semi finals. Through careful listening, and asking the panel of judges for the meanings of the words given and to repeat the word, contestants found themselves securing themselves seats to the semi finals.
A significant feature of last weekend’s programme was the participation of Archana Perera of St. Peter’s College, Colombo 4 who became the 1st runner-up of the Spellmaster 2011.
Among the 20 contestants were students from the Central province (5), Eastern (2), North Central (1), North Western (4), Northern (1), Southern (5), Sabaragammuwa (1), Uva (1) and Western (20) Provinces. With the selection of these 40 contestants, Spellmaster now has 60 competitors who have occupied their positions in the semi finals.
To see the next 100 competitors battling it out for the next 20 seats in an exciting competition, watch Spellmaster this Sunday on Sirasa TV at 6 pm.
