Edexcel presents over one hundred World Prizes to Sri Lanka
View(s):As has become the norm for Sri Lanka, students from over 182 schools around the country swept the boards at the Edexcel High Achievers’ Award Ceremony 2012. In a prize list that awarded over two hundred prizes to students who sat the A/Level and International GCSE examinations in 2011 and 2012, this year Edexcel also felicitated students who excelled in the Primary and Lower Secondary syllabuses now being conducted in schools across the island. A total of 57 students won International GCSE grade prizes, while GCE A/Level saw 23 grade prizes.
Asian International’s NaythranThayakaran and SusendralingamThuvahrakan gained 5A*s in the GCE A/Levels, while Gateway College Kandy’s MinuriDharmasena and IsuriRathnayake gained best results with 12 Grade A*s at the June 2011 and 2012 International GCSE examinations. The best results for the highest average in the International GCSE results was obtained by KhylaMuzni of Elizabeth Moir School for both 2011 and 2012 examinations, while Adhil Ismail from Belvoir College was also awarded the same for June 2012. The Best GCE A/Level results based on highest average was gained by LakshithaRajendran of AIS. Similarly the highest average on Primary Achievements went to PunsaraTennakoon of Horizon College and the Lower Secondary Achievement to AzeezaYaseen of Harcourts International.
In a congratulatory message, British High Commissioner John Rankin said, “I am always very pleased to hear how well Sri Lankan students do at UK qualifications such as the Edexcel International GCSEs and A levels. A large part of these qualifications and award winners are supported by the British Council. UK qualifications contribute to the British Council’s purpose of creating international opportunities and building trust between people worldwide. Globally, the British Council delivers around 150,000 exams for Edexcel annually in over 40 countries.
It is a win-win situation for the UK and these countries, including Sri Lanka; promoting and giving access to high-quality and quality-assured UK qualifications.” Augmenting these thoughts, Country Director of The British Council Tony Reilly opined that the acquisition of an internationally recognised qualification from the UK opens up a wealth of opportunities – educational, professional and personal. “Your results are not just impressive by Sri Lankan standards, but show that you are among the best students in the world. You should be extremely proud.” This was even more evident as nearly fifty two World Prizes were awarded for GCE A/Levels, International GCSE and Primary and Lower Secondary examinations
including the first prize in Mathematics, Science, Art & Design, Human Biology, Sinhala, Accounting, Biology, Business Studies and Law, while a host of students were among the first ten in the world in English Language, English Literature, Commerce, Economics, ICT, History, Business Communications, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and the languages French, German & Tamil.
Also at the ceremony were Country Examinations Manager/Assistant Director of the British Council Harriet Gardner,RanuKawatra CEO & President of Pearson Education, Naveen Rajlani. Senior VP School &Edexcel – Academic, Pearson Education. Assistant Vice President of Pearson Edexcel – India Subcontinent Premila Paulraj, in her speech expanded on the recognition granted for the primary and lower secondary students for their performances this year. “These achievement tests are held in several countries internationally, providing our students the opportunity to sit for public exams and compete at international level from a very young age.
These tests will no doubt strengthen the competency level of students aged 8 to 14, helping them improve their performance at International GCSEs and beyond.” Expanding further on this UK based National Curriculum launched in 2011 and designed specifically for international schools for students from Years 3 to 9 for Maths, English and Science, she said the curriculum therefore give students a holistic education and the teachers an easy-to-implement framework and student monitoring process.
“We have also experienced exceptional growth in the number of students sitting for Edexcel examinations in both International GCSE and GCE A/Levels, a certain indication of the exceptional performance of Sri Lankans at world class examinations and the quality of teacher-training programmesEdexcel continues to offer.”
Congratulating the high achievers, Managing Director of Pearson Qualifications International Manos Kapterian asserted that he was personally honoured to be among some of the world’s brightest, most ambitious and dedicated students.
