Interschool Titration Competition – a huge success
View(s):A successful titration competition was held from 15th -21st November 2011 in which about 60 schools from all parts of the island participated. Best schools and individual participating students have been awarded with certificates and prizes in a ceremony Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo -08 won first prize by obtaining the highest marks. Central College, Kuliyapitiya and Vidyananda College, Mulliyawalai won the second and third prizes respectively. In order to enhance the laboratory skill of A/L science students, the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon has organized a similar competition from 26th – 30th November 2012. The objective of this competition is to assess abilities achieved by the students with respect to the following aspects of titrations:
Laboratory skill of conducting titrations –
Twenty aspects of the laboratory skill in titration are evaluated while the students carry out the titration. Some of them are,
Rinsing the burette.
Reading the burette correctly prior to titration
Reading the burette correctly etc.
Marks have been awarded for each student after a close observation. Proper recording of the results obtained and calculation –
Following table was given to student to record the results of each titration.
It is expected that the students calculate the correct concentration based on the burette reading obtained.
Correlation of the results with the theory of the GCE (A/L) syllabus-
Students are requested to sketch the titration curves for the titrations they have carried out.
