Want to be a fashion graduate? LIFT creates the path for you
View(s):“We nurture creativity, and we see how young creative minds develop throughout the 2 ½ years they spend with us. Fashion design is a subject that relates to many other subjects as it involves research & development, understanding the history and psychology of clothing, marketing and selling the product and most importantly presenting a quality product to the customer in style. At LIFT (Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology, the premiere fashion education provider in Sri Lanka) a student can gain the complete experience of all the above areas which is very important to a designer, during their advanced diploma in Fashion design course” Niroshani Leanage – managing director of LIFT.
At LIFT there are full time courses for school leavers on week days (O/L’s or A/L’s completed) and part time courses for working individuals on Saturdays. All full time courses lead to bachelor’s degrees in the subject areas of Fashion design / Textiles for fashion / Footwear and accessory design. All students begin to learn the basics and they specialise in selected pathways according to their talents and capabilities. These courses covers a wide subject area including art & design, fashion communication, colour theory and visual studies, fashion illustration, computer aided design, research & design development, Pattern making, garment manufacturing technology, textile design, footwear design , eco fashion, Costume history, fashion business studies, fashion styling and final collection.
All part time courses are offered on Saturday mornings with a selection of courses such as Diploma in Fashion Design, Diploma in Fashion Marketing and Foundation in Art & Design. The diploma in fashion design course is a 18 months course where on completion of the programme the student has the option of deciding to continue studies on week days up to the advanced level or the degree full time. At this point students will be exempted from the modules they have already covered during the diploma.
Fashion Marketing is also offered on Saturday mornings and this course is ideal for the ones who wish to study the retail fashion business and marketing concepts. The blend of creativity and business will open new career options for these students in the area of visual merchandising, fashion buying, fashion retail store management and fashion retail promotion. The course covers the basics of marketing concepts, fashion trends, consumer behaviour, fashion retail, window displays, fashion branding and promotions. At the end of the course students will develop professional portfolios using CAD to represent their ideas visually.
Art & Design is offered on Fridays and Saturdays for anyone interested in developing art skills, who are looking to enroll into professional design related courses, or for the ones who needs to create a portfolio in art and design. Anyone above 15 years could join this course. Students in the age group of 10 to 15 years can also opt for the special Art and design course that will be offered on week day evenings from 4.30 pm – 6pm
All students get the opportunity of participating for external projects, competitions, events and extra activities LIFT organises regularly. LIFT welcomes corporate projects as it give a complete project experience to students from a different prospective. One such project that was completed recently was the LIPTON tea launch which took place in September this year. A group of students created a collection to reveal seven tea flavours of Jasmine, Ginger, Mint, Citrus, English breakfast, lemon and Earl’s grey. These projects are done in addition to the course work and students experience working with the corporate sector for special events related to fashion.
