Our malfunctioning and non functioning traffic lights
Traffic lights or signal lights are meant to ease traffic congestion and are essential to motorists and pedestrians alike especially in busy cities to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. The city of Colombo sees around 800,000 persons entering daily in around 250,000 vehicles. Additionally around another 700,000 people live in the city itself.
Unfortunately the traffic lights at some of the busiest junctions in the city do not function. Our photographer Susantha Liyanawatte was able to capture on film some of the busiest routes where traffic lights do not function or malfunction!
Among them were those at Bambalapitiya, Chatham Street, Fort, Orugodawatte, Sir Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha and Slave Island -junctions. Motorist Kumara Wijenayake said, some drivers resorted to reckless driving when the traffic lights did not function and which became worse when a traffic police officer was not present.
“Recently it was ruled that traffic police officers were not be deployed and traffic would be controlled by signal lights. But this was proving to be a failure as many of the traffic lights were not functioning”.
At Orugodawatte, where large numbers of vehicles enter and leave the city, the traffic lights were malfunctioning. The green, red and amber lights were all functioning at the same time…
A traffic police officer claimed this happened when it rains and water short circuited the circuits.
