Daya Mina promises all things bright at annual sale
Bright colours, beautiful shapes and inspiring effort will greet you at “The World”, the annual Christmas sale of “Daya Mina”.
“Daya Mina” comes under the “Sudaya Trust”. Along with two other residential children’s homes- “Supem Uyana” in Gonapinuwela and “Meth Mihira” in Moratuwa, these are centres for the differently abled run by the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary who have been working in Sri Lanka since 1896.
The sale will have the work of around 70 students of all three residences showcasing the items and crafts they have made throughout the year.
Their main aim being “working towards independence”, Daya Mina has been providing vocational training in varied subjects like carpentry, cookery and sewing to differently-abled youngsters since 1964. “We also make them participate in a lot of extracurricular activities like physical exercises, music and dancing,” says the Directress of “Daya Mina” Sr. Anastasia.
“We keep them happy and occupied. They might not be very skilled at what they do, but making an effort and trying till they succeed makes them feel special.”
There will be candles, woodwork, notebooks, religious reliefs, wall hangings, needle work, gift items and Christmas decorations, as well as wines and chutneys all made by the hands of these special youngsters.
“The World” will take place at Shalika Hall on December 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 8p.m.
