GLASGOW, Nov 30, 2012 (AFP) – Rangers manager Ally McCoist on Friday expressed concern about reports the Scottish giants are planning to sell naming rights to their historic Ibrox stadium.

Local media reports suggest the owner of English club Newcastle United, Mike Ashley, is in talks with Rangers chief executive Charles Green to have the name of Ashley’s Sports Direct retail firm attached to the ground.

Ashley has already done a similar thing with Newcastle, to the dismay of many of the club’s fans, and McCoist believes Rangers supporters should be consulted about any proposals to re-christen Ibrox.

“I can appreciate it’s a really delicate issue and I would imagine it would split fan opinion,” said McCoist, a former Rangers striker.
“I’ve got to be honest and say I’m pretty open-minded about it.

“At the same time, I definitely think the fans would certainly have to have a voice and an opinion on the final decision.

“We saw the reaction of the Newcastle fans when it happened down there and I’d imagine a good percentage of our support would feel the same way.
“My own opinion is that I’m neither for nor against it — I’m reasonably open-minded.

“I do understand the business side of it but I do understand, more than anything, history and tradition.”
