North gets their own soccer stadium
Jaffna is getting ready to give a Red Carpet welcome to Mr. Sepp Blatter, the President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) when he comes in late December to open the Football Stadium in Ariyalai, Jaffna.
The stadium itself is an outright gift of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to Jaffna. It is situated about 4 km from the Jaffna town and on the A9 highway. About USD 400,000 has been promised for this project.
The ground has been leased to the Jaffna Football League by the Ariyalai Central Sports Club. The stadium, which will be used primarily as a training center, has a pavilion, dormitory, auditorium and dressing rooms. The idea to have a stadium of this nature was the brain child of Mr. Manilal Fernando, Ex-Co member of the FIFA and the Chairman of the Ex-Co of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka. According to Mr. Clifford Antonipillai, the President of the Jaffna Football League, who is directly supervising the construction, this move will go a long way to give a boost to football in North Sri Lanka.
