Korean Air will resume flying into Colombo from March next year since it suspended services 28 years ago.

The airline would be flying direct to Colombo on the Seoul – Colombo – Male and Male – Colombo – Seoul routes with cargo at a maximum of 20 tonnes with passengers.

The airline would provide three class configured aircrafts for economy, business and first class passengers on this route since all its aircrafts have a first class cabin. It was also noted that most of the wealthy Koreans prefer to travel exclusively on first class.
Flying on the A330 – 300 series the Korean Air flights would operate three times a week to Colombo on Tuesday s, Thursday s and Sundays commencing March 9, 2013.

The airline’s GSA partner Alpha Tours Managing Director Priyantha Mendis speaking at the media briefing said they would help to increase tourist traffic from Korea and as it operates to 15 cities in Japan and 23 cities in China.

Initially, the airline hopes to generate a load factor of about 75 per cent in the first year, he said.

Korean investors have expressed interest in doing business in Colombo, a reason for establishing a link with the carrier.

The airline pulled out operations from Colombo in 1984 since it operated via the Sri Lankan capital to the Middle East. Demand dropped for this route when less Koreans travelled to the Middle East for work, Mr. Mendis explained.

Although the airline used to be the first to engage in freighter services to Colombo it would not be currently looking at these opportunities due to the drop in demand for cargo movements worldwide, it was noted.
