New Taiwan technology to protect PCs from heat, sudden power failures
While computers (PCs) are generally vulnerable to heat, sudden power failures and corrosion among other things, new technology has been developed – and now available in Sri Lanka – to counter these threats.
Gigabyte Technology Co Ltd, a Taiwanese firm, has manufactured a ‘Motherboard’ that would protect the computer from areas such as humidity, power fluctuation, power failures and high temperatures.
The product branded as ‘Gigabyte Ultra Durable 4’ will be sold throughout Sri Lanka by EZY Holdings Ltd. At a media conference held in Colombo this week to mark the awarding of distributorship to EZY Holdings, Alan Szu, Sales Manager, Gigabyte Technologies said that a PC Motherboard is like the heart of a human body since all the components are connected to it and damage to motherboard would cause the PC to malfunction.
He said that in a country like Sri Lanka there could be high temperature and humidity, both of which could damage or corrode the motherboard.
Yaasim Nizam, Group General Manager, EZY Holdings said that Gigabyte Ultra Durable 4 is unique with high performance and it would boot the PC almost immediately when the machine is switched on. On the sidelines of the media briefing, when the Business Times (BT) pointed out that the after sales services is important for products like computers and asked why according to him the 3-year warranty period offered by Gigabyte could be reduced to one to two years by the local vendor, Mr Szu said that some vendors are somewhat concerned about the hassle of providing after-sales services and so they tend to limit the warranty period.
He said that as there is tight competition in the market for this type of products the market conditions need to be adjusted for vendors to offer the same warranty period offered by them. He told the BT that the laptops and other smaller version of computers cannot provide the high services of a desktop computer. Desktops have come to stay for a long time in the market with the company selling some 18 million motherboards in 2011 while this year sales would be around 18.5 million units.
He said that they are a company that carries out technological research throughout and creates innovative products, and is now working on low power consumption computers. Such products are ideally suited to the Sri Lankan market specially for the rural poor who could not afford the high cost of electricity.
