Qatar team visiting Colombo on migrant worker issues
View(s):A top delegation from the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) from Qatar is visiting Sri Lanka on Tuesday to discuss areas of mutual interest, particularly Sri Lankan workers in Doha.
Qatar is one of the wealthiest states in West Asia and has many Sri Lankan workers. The country is hosting the FIFA World Cup tournament in 2020 and undertaking massive infrastructure development leading to the creation of a million more jobs. The delegation led is by Dr. Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri – Chairman, NHRC, and includes. Ali Sulaiti – Director, Office of the NHRC Chairman; Jaber Al Marri – Director, NHRC Legal Department; Brek Ali – NHRC Public Relations Department; Ms. Jumaya Al Sulaiti – Director, Investigation Department and Boyko Atanasov – Country Representative, Solidarity Center/Qatar. The Washington-based Solidarity Centre’s Colombo office is coordinating the visit. The short 24-hour visit includes a meeting with Foreign Employment, Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera, Ministry Secretary Nissanka Wijeratne and a 2-hour roundtable discussion at the Hilton on the protection and rights of migrant workers in Qatar with activists and migrant welfare groups in Sri Lanka. The visiting delegation is also due to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. The team proceeds to Philippines from Colombo on a similar exercise. In terms of Sri Lanka, Qatar – due to its new-found wealth and rapid development – is the second largest source of employment after Saudi Arabia.
