Karandeniya Central was inaugurated by P. De S. Kularathna, as one of the central colleges among 54, under the central College concept of the C.W.W.Kannangara in 1942 under the administration of the first principal .B.L.S.Silva.

The college today, as a 1AB school, provides education to nearly 2800 students from Grade 6 to Grade 13. It is regarded as one of the leading schools in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. Students have the options of studying in Arts, Commerce and Science streams for their Advanced Levels. The College comprises of more than 90 academic staff. The present principal S.P. The College is one of the early schools that offered science education in Sinhalese in Sri Lanka. Two students qualified to enter the University of Ceylon in Science in Sinhalese language from the first batch of graduates in 1961. They are now university professors. As a result, this school is rapidly becoming a leading school in the zone and has undergone tremendous changes even in their infrastructure.

“Always providing more opportunities to the students to face challenges” is the foremost aim of the administration and that is the prime triumph of Karandeniya Central College.
