Prajapathy Gothami has proved its mettle by its achievements
Since the inception in 1890 Prajapathy Gothami Balika Maha Vidyalaya has been a been deep-rooted with excellence. The school has
been classified as the only girls’ school in Ambalangoda area. This school has fulfilled its responsibility to the society by producing leading experts in all fields.
In 1890 Mrs. L. Lora De Silva Jayawardana, daughter of Fredrick De Silva Jayawardana, started the school under the name “Gothami Balika Sheekshalaya” at the premises where the present Ambalangoda Zonal Education Office is situated, only with a very few students. The declaration of Gothami Balika Vidyalaya as a government school on November 18, 1960, which had been a private educational institution before, the launch of its new beginning. The first principal of the college was Mrs. Josaline De Silva.
This year (2012) with over 2700 students, 79 teachers and another 11 supportive staff, Prajapathi Gothami Balika MV has provided an excellent educational system. The Principal Mrs D.C. Damayanthy who was appointed in 2008, directs the whole school with dedication. Presently Prajapathy Gothami BMV has classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13. Advanced Level grades conduct classes in Science, Commerce and Arts, which include languages and aesthetics.
Since its establishment Prajapathy has been foremost in the field of education in the zone, producing excellent results at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations. This school has been accepted as the best school not only through remarkable results at examinations, but also with achievements in the fields of sports, arts, music and other extra-curricular activities.
In 2010 the school dazzled with consecutive victories in all Grade 5 scholarship, G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E.
(A/L) examinations. The 2010 Grade Five scholarship results provided excellent results and the 2011 result gave Miss. G.T. Damayanthy (Grade 5 teacher) a foreign trip for the primary section teachers Mr. A. Sunil Shantha and Mrs. P.P. Nila Padmini for producing best results in the Zone.Furthermore 2010 G.C.E.(O/L) and A/L results brought the school to the top among the Southern Provincial Council Schools.
Prajapathy has done extremely well in the field of sports and other extracurricular activities. The college drama troop was placed second at the All Island Drama Competition, 2011 and S.M. Nipuni Chamodya was selected as the best actress while the teacher, Mrs.H. Chamila Prabashwari bagged the award for the best script. The dancing troops obtained second and third places in the All Island Dancing Competitions in 2011and 2012.
The Prajapathians have done well in sports as well. Tennis player Dilmi Hirashika Colombage, reached the no.1 position in the All Island Tennis Ranking in 2011 and 2012 (under 10 & 12). D.D.T. Neranja Madushani represented the Sri Lankan Schools Netball “ B” team for the Malaysian tour in 2010 and represented the Schools A team for the Australian tour. In that series T. Rashmi Sudari and P.L. Harsha Priyadarshani represented the Under 19 school netball “A” team this year for the Australian tour.
The college Debating Team, Eastern and Western music groups, Art unit and Language units has brought fame to the college not only in the provincial competitions but also at All Island competitions.
Prajapathy Gothami is not just another girls’ school, but it is a school of excellence and provides a knowledgeable society, skilled in order to lead an all-round life. Undoubtedly the Prajapathians have proved this by their achievements.
