The following are just a few ideas on how to get your home ready for the holidays. Narrowing down the options is easier when you design around a colour scheme for a whole room or your entire home.

Red and green are traditional choices for Christmas, but this year, try experimenting with different colour palettes, like cool blue and sparkling white to make a winter wonderland scene.

The simple fairy lights personalized with cloth or tissue paper flowers are another creative tip. Use Inexpensive chunky LED lights to help save you money on electricity.

If you are the and creative type, your head would already be brimming with ideas and new ways to give your cosy nest a classy and holiday atmosphere.

For those of you who are looking for ideas, try your hand at the following padded wreath idea suggested by Kamini Witharana. Ms Witharana is an interior designer by profession and she also conducts sewing classes and classes on Christmas decorations classes at the Ladies College Vocational Education Center.

Making a simple padded wreath

Things needed:- Christmas themed fabric and sewing equipment

Method

First draw out the shapes a, b, c and d as shown in the diagram above. Determine how big you want the wreath to be by drawing out the shapes and then cutting the blocks.

Use the paper blocks to cut the cloth into the shapes a, b, c and d as shown in the picture.

To make the wreath cut the following number of pieces for each shape

  • 8 pieces of shape a,
  • 8 pieces of shape b,
  • 8 pieces of shape d
  • 16 pieces of shape c

First attach parts of the cut out fabric of each shape a, b, c, and d as shown.

Then follow through by completing a circle of the cut shapes of a, b, c, and d and attaching all the pieces in the same order.

For the back section cut one square piece of fabric, turn the good side of the material in and stitch along the gallops. When doing this make sure the right side of the circle you created by attaching the cloth shapes is also with its right side in.

After stitching, turn the right side of the material out.Remember to leave the middle part of the small circle without stitching it, to put the padding in after stuffing with padding thoroughly to give a fuller and strong feeling stitch and seal it.

You can decorate the wreath according to your feel. A small bell on top and a bow at the bottom is a suggestion.
