For 25 years, Pragna Pradeepa has been enlightening the lives of children with the gift of education. To celebrate this great feat, the organisation headed by United National Party Provincial Councillor Jayantha de Silva, will distribute school books and study equipment to 10,000 students at a ceremony on December 14 at Campbell Park.

In addition to that, 10 students will receive scholarships to study in Japan, courtesy the Vipassi foundation in Borella.

Explaining the vision behind the programme, Dr. de Silva said: “I came to this position from the grassroots level. It was a hard journey for me. There are talented children in low-income families. They can’t afford to send their children to school. The aim of the Pragna Pradeepa programme is to help these students and fund their education.”

He said that since 1984, Pragna Pradeepa had donated school books to more than 100,000 students. “The main objective of this programme is to help these children stand on their feet so that they will be able to support their families and bring them to a better status,” he said. “I get a great satisfaction from helping out these poor children.

I am happy to be the pioneer who introduced this concept to our country.”  Dr. de Silva said the programme was funded by him and donations from foreign and local well-wishers who are interested in helping these children. He denied that there were political motives behind the programme.
