Full Bar Assn. meets to discuss CJ’s impeachment
Amid mounting concerns over the impeachment of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake the full membership of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) will meet on Saturday, December 15.
Seven members of the Parliamentary Select Committee have already found her guilty on three charges.
Among the concerns, BASL President Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said yesterday were matters relating to the impeachment procedure and certain derogatory remarks hurled at Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake during the PSC proceedings.
These concerns were made known at a meeting with the provincial Bar Association presidents and secretaries yesterday. It was also decided to hold an emergency Executive Committee meeting today, to further discuss matters, he said.
Mr. Rajapakshe said that at yesterday’s meeting the provincial Bar Association Presidents and Secretaries were apprised of what action had been taken so far by the Bar Association in respect of the impeachment of the CJ.
The representatives were also apprised of the outcome of the meetings the Bar Association Steering Committee had with the President, the Speaker and the Chief Justice, he added.
Meanwhile, a resolution that the Bar Association would not welcome any new appointee to the office of the Chief Justice in the event of the incumbent Chief Justice being impeached and removed from her office, was handed over to the Bar Association President Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
Senior Counsel Upul Jayasuriya told the Sunday Times that the resolution would be tabled for a vote at the Special General Meeting of the Bar Association scheduled for Saturday (15).
