Sophisticated seismic monitoring systems in Ampara
Three seismic monitoring systems have been installed in Wadinagala, Allanoya and Dewalhinda in Ampara following a series of recent tremors experienced in these areas.
Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) Chairman Dr. W.P. Wijayananda told the Sunday Times that the main objective of installing this system was to obtain accurate information on the tremors.
“We have three permanent seismic monitoring stations at Pallekele, Hakmana and Mahakandarawa, but, as these tremors are faint ones, with very low Richter scale values, signals picked up by the main stations were quite weak. We could not get the correct readings, and had to rely on what people said about how they felt the tremors and when” he said.
However, he said that tremors have not occurred in the area to date, since the installation of the monitoring system.
Adding that seismic studies are currently under way to determine the exact cause for these tremors, he said that the reasons could be either natural or man-made. Explaining man-made reasons; he said the major construction projects currently taking place in the northeast, which involves deep piling, could be one among man-made reasons.
The tremors were first felt in the Ampara District last Thursday (Nov.29) in Inginiyagala and Wadinagala areas, where four tremors were felt between 6.40 pm and 7.00 pm. Another series of tremors were felt on Monday (Dec.3) in the same areas.
However, these tremors are reported to have been of low Richter scale values of around 3 to 3.2.
