But fishermen from Chilaw claim the price of prawns has been artificially inflated and would cost far less if the state were involved in purchasing. “These days the catch is very good, especially in the evenings.

Fishermen are happy with the bountiful harvest, but we regret having selling them to middlemen at a low prices, as we are aware of the high cost of prawns in the open market” said Ranjith Kumara a fisherman from Chilaw.

According to fishermen in the area, they are not permited to sell their catch in the retail market but are compelled to sell it to a few businessmen.

“Prawns are purchased for around Rs. 300 per kg from the fishermen but are sold at Rs. 400-500 at the Chilaw fish market as well as in Colombo” he said.
