Anura Rohana Dazzles to defend UTE-CAT Open title
View(s):The UTE-CAT Sri Lanka Open Golf Championship concluded at the Ridgeways with a sensational comeback performance by Anura
Rohana who defended his title after applying pressure on leader Vijitha Bandara in the final flight.
With 9 holes to go in the championship Bandara was still 3 strokes ahead but persistently good golf by Rohana reduced the lead to 1 stroke playing the 15th hole and with a 2 stroke swing on the 15th. Rohana led the championship for the first time by 1shot but 3 Putted the 16th to allow Bandara to share the lead again on 7 under Par. K. Prabagaran was on 5 under and on the 17th hole while Bandara dropped a shot and shared second place with Prabagaran and Mithun Perera who in the preceding flight Birdied the final hole to end up on 6 under Par.
The 18th hole was poised for a thriller with Rohana leading on 7 under with Bandara, Prabagaran and Perera joint second, 1 stroke behind. Prabagaran and Rohana hit their second shots to under 8 feet from the flag while Bandara almost holed his Birdie from 30 feet. Prabagaran putted first having to hole his Birdie Putt to tie for the lead but missed by enough to allow Rohana the pleasure and pride of nailing his Birdie Putt to eventually win by a comfortable two strokes as he won the Sri Lanka Open Championship for the seventh time to join K. Nandasena Perera who reined supreme 1982 to 1992.
