Lyceum N’Eliya clinch zonal badminton crown

Lyceum International School Nuwara Eliya became overall champions at the zonal rounds of the AVI Junior National Badminton Competition, organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Association, at the Municipal Indoor Stadium in Nuwara Eliya.

They won the doubles event in the boys’ Under-19 age category with Gyrika Aluthge and Keuse Lawrence taking the honours. Aluthge, who is also the captain of the school badminton team, won the Under-19 boys’ singles championship. The girls’ captain of Lyceum Nuwara Eliya, Maneesha Lakmali won the Under-19 girls’ singles title.

Their Under-17 girls’ doubles team, consisting of Haridha Mohan Raj and Anne Nirushala also emerged champions. Mohan Raj went on to clinch the girl’s singles title in the same age category. The Under-15 girls’ pair of Rakshana Jayasekara and Vimansha Shamini dominated their age category while winning its championship. Jayasekara conquered the singles competition in the same age category to win the title. In addition Timasha Fernando and Sandamini Senanayake won the Under-13 girls’ doubles title while Ashan Ratnayake gave Lyceum Nuwara Eliya their ninth championship title by winning the Under-11 boys’ singles.

In addition Lyceum Nuwara Eliya also emerged runners-up in 15 different categories. Nadun Shanaka and Kevin Stelon, who emerged runners-up in the boys’ Under-19 doubles also went on to finish second and third respectively in the singles category. Ryan Abeygunasekara, who was placed third in the Under-17 singles, paired up with Devaprashanth Periyasami to emerge runners-up in the doubles category. Anne Nirushala went on to emerge the Under-17 girl’s singles runner-up.

Heshara and Sasanka Aluthge were placed second in the Under-15 boys’ doubles category. Abhishek Nelson was placed second while Heshara was placed third in the Under-15 boys’ singles category. In the girls’ segment of the same age group Vimansa Abeygoonasekara was placed second in the singles. Sandamini Senanayake won the runner-up title in the Under-13 girls’ singles while her doubles partner Timasha Fernando was placed third in the same category. Ronal Abeyggonasekara was placed third in the Under-13 boys’ singles while Bonnie Franklin reached second in the Under-11 boys’ singles. The Lyceum Nuwara Eliya shuttlers are trained under Jithma Perera and Sasini Senaratne. David Hawks and Nirmaline Perera are the teachers-in-charge. – NA
