Royal take Champions Trophy on penalties

Royal College defeated S. Thomas’ College 5-3 in a penalty shootout to retain the Champions Trophy, in their Under 19 annual football fixture, which was played at the Royal College Sports Complex recently.

At the short whistle the home side led 1-0. In the 24th minute of play, right side winger Indrajith Ranaraja took a pass from Mohamed Arshad to beat the Thomian custodian, Lakshman Sivasubramaniam, who up to that moment gave a brilliant display between the posts to deny Royal College several more goals.

After the change of ends, S. Thomas’ were awarded a penalty in the 52nd minute and their skipper made no mistake in slotting home the equalizer.

At the end of regular time, the scores were deadlocked at one all and in the penalty shootout which followed, Royal wrapped up the game with a score of 5-3.

The trophy was sponsored by the Royal College Union Football Advisory and Management Committee.
