state to fund the creations of young inventors. In fact one of the topmost business concerns in Sri Lanka, Brandix which has wings in India and Bangladesh, is calling all those who have new ideas to come to them for help. These facts were revealed at the ‘Sahasak Nimavum 2012 – National Awards for Inventors 2012′ held last week at the BMICH where the award for the most outstanding invention ‘Dasis Award’ in the Commercialized Category was won by Anura Samarawickrama for his creation of ‘Live Flex Artificial Leg’. Mr Amaratunga was a commerce student and did not have any science or technological knowhow, but the invention was created through his creativity and imagination. He was moved by the suffering of the disabled and this is the outcome of how he thought was the best way to alleviate the suffering of the disabled. The difference between the normal conventional artificial legs available and this ‘Live Flex’ is that it could be maneouvered easily.

While his invention is appreciated locally, it also had hit the international inventions arena when he won the Silver medal at the 35th International Inventors Competition held in Switzerland in 2005 and a special award at the Seoul International Inventors Fair held in Korea in 2009. The other two top winners were: Manju Samarasinghe Gunawardena in the Open Category for his inventions of Ozone Food Sanitizing CIP and Waste Water Recovery System; Nano Silver Impregnated Non-Woven Wound Dressing and Specialized water Conditioner for North Central Province and the other was won by Ganindu Nanayakkara under University and Technical College Category for his invention of Novel Computer Controlling Wireless Device for Handicapped persons. There were various inventions made by hundreds of persons, including a large number of students, who were rewarded with awards, certificates and in some instances cash rewards.

Faizer Musthapha, Deputy Minister of Technology Research as Chief Guest said that undeveloped countries could be developed with the help of science and technology and these could be used to make new inventions. He said that the private sector should join in this task of helping the inventors as the government cannot do it alone.
