Australia’s Monash University is among the most popular graduate study institutions in Australia for Sri Lankan students, says a Sri Lankan don who has taught there for the past 15 years.

Associate Prof (Ms) Ramanie Samaratunge, Deputy Director of Education, Dept of Management, among the Sri Lankan academic staff attached to Monash University, says the university has been the most popular among Sri Lankan students.

She said at a news briefing in Colombo called by the local partner of the institution to promote the university that Monash University is highly ranked in Australia and has an international reputation for excellence.

American Education Centre Ltd (ANC) is the only licensed education partner with Monash College represented in Sri Lanka.

Several senior staff of the university, Australia was in Sri Lanka to hold a get-together for the Monash alumni in Sri Lanka. The group includes Prof Stephanie Fahey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement), Prof Gary Magee, Deputy Dean (Research) Faculty of Business and Economics and Prof Ian McLoughlin, Head, Management Dept.

Monash University is also supporting the 9th International Conference of the Network of Asia Pacific Schools and Institutes of Public Administration and Governance (NAPSIPAG) that is being held in partnership with the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Aministration (SLIDA).

Some parents of students studying in Australia and some passed out students told the Business Times that one of the reasons as to why students select Australia is that once they pass out they are issued with a 2-year work study permit and it would not be a difficult for them to find a job as the Australian economy is strong.

Though the fees and other charges are competitive compared to other developed countries, another attribute could be the semblance of an amiable cultural mix and tolerance, they pointed out.
