Having been informed by these values the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, being the pioneering management faculty in Sri Lanka, is committed to the highest standards of learning and teaching, promotion of scholarship and research and, integration of theory and practice through interaction with private and public sector entities and wider society. Indeed, the Faculty has been the gateway to success for corporate leaders and is, thus, regarded as the Centre of Excellence for Management Education in Sri Lanka.
For nearly 50 years, the Faculty has led the development of management education in the country by offering globally competitive postgraduate programmes in management which meet the needs of domestic and global economies. Therefore, the Faculty has been a dynamic and forward looking centre for higher learning and hence regularly updates its curricular. Irrespective of the level of study – i.e., undergraduate or postgraduate – the Faculty provides intellectual challenge and stimulation in a highly competitive and volatile environment. In fact, the Faculty consists of more than 140 permanent academic members who are strengthened further by over 25 PhD holders in various disciplines in Management Studies. In addition to the fulltime-internal staff, the Faculty has the capacity to bring distinguished academics, practitioners and professionals on visiting basis to enhance the quality of the programmes it offers. Therefore, the Faculty has the capability of providing specialization in a wide range of subjects to the participants of its postgraduate programmes.
MBA/MPM/MSc in Management Programmes
With this background the Faculty – in collaboration with the Faculty of Graduate Studies of the University – offers two year (full-time)
postgraduate degree programmes in the broad discipline of Management. These globally competitive programmes include Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Management (MPM) and Master of Science in Management (MSc in Management). They are designed to provide the participants with a comprehensive postgraduate level academic qualification, which blends theory with the real life experiences, with a view to enhancing their personal and professional competencies to cope with and overcome the challenges of the contemporary corporate world. In fact, the programmes begin with foundation level courses, which mature into more integrative courses on both generalized and specialized areas of study to be followed by either a project or a research or a thesis. Therefore, they are meant for private and public sector managers who are looking for a holistic management curriculum of national and international repute with right doses of skill development and attitudinal transformational focus. Thus, the participants are empowered either to pursue a General MBA or to specialize in a study area of their choice.
