citizens to the society who has always been superiors in both provincial and national level as well as extracurricular activities.

The beginnings of the Sri Sumangala NS goes back over 142 years. It was initiated as a Bilingual Boys’ School in 1870, closer to Galle Road, Hikkaduwa. It was then renamed as ‘Hikkaduwa English Language School’ in 1919. In 1935 with the taking over of private schools to the government, this college was acquired by the Education Department and was named as “Hikkaduwa Government Boys’ School”. The College began its illustrious journey in 1944, after being selected as one of the first few Central Colleges produced by the vision of the late Dr. C.W.W. Kannangara. 1959 was another landmark when the school was named as “Hikkaduwa Sri Sumangala Central College” (Mixed School). Finally the school was enriched as a national school in 1999.
