How do you get your students to read? How do you use newspapers as a tool to further their knowledge?
In response to many calls to The Sunday Times announcement this month of a free workshop this December especially for teachers who are keen to take the newspaper into their classrooms and enhance student activities, the deadline for registration has been extended to December 18.

The workshop titled ‘Newspapers in the classroom – a tool for teachers’ organised by the Sunday Times and the British Council will be held on December 21 in Colombo and on December 22 in Kandy. Conducted in association with the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) the half-day interactive session will be led by WAN IFRA senior consultant Dr. Gerard van der Weijden whose forte is young reader initiatives. In this workshop Dr. Gerard van der Weijden will also focus on school newspapers.

After years of working for the national Dutch Newspapers in Education (NIE) programme, he is now involved in a multitude of young reader projects all over the world. Dr Gerard van der Weijden, a Dutch citizen living in Belgium is the inventor of The Reading Passport, used in over 30 countries and, for WAN-IFRA, the World Newspaper Reading Passport and the World Football Reading Passport. Dr Gerard van der Weijden will introduce the concept of Newspapers in Education (NIE) and draw from his own experience in the industry while guiding teachers through the thinking process of incorporating newspapers in classroom learning with tips and suggestions on cultivating young readers in school.

While the workshop is geared towards teachers of students between the ages of 10-16 years, those teachers involved in other grades who are interested in participating could also apply.
