Can Sachin rob Kyle’s crown
View(s):Defending champion Kyle de Silva’s absence will leave Sachin as one of the favourites to clinch the Sri Lanka Junior Open Golf Championship, when the three-day competition tees off next Wednesday at the RCGC Ridgeways in Colombo. Sachin de Silva of British School in Colombo will come out with all possible odds to secure the overall championship of this year’s Junior Open, where over 100 young golfers are set to compete.
The tournament which will be played under four categories is open to both boys and girls under 18 years. The competition according to the organizers Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) has been the breeding ground of future golfers for Sri Lanka since its inception in 1975.
“Golfers such as Mithun Perera, Binupa Wijesinghe, Lalith kumara, Tiss Chandradasa and Dhanishka de Silva all have won this tournament and they went on to reach great heights in golf. This tournament can be branded as the platform for future golfers with the sport being taken up by many youngsters in Sri Lanka. The competition will only grow in time and this is one of the ideal sports in Sri Lanka next to billiards and snooker and cricket that has the potential to win a global title,” emphasized Ana Punchihewa, the President of SLGU.
The tournament will be conducted in three different age categories, where players will be drafted to the gold, silver and bronze divisions. Players who are under the age of 10 will compete in the bronze division where the winner will be declared on gross aggregate scores after strokeplay over nine holes over two days. Competitors aged between 11 and 14 will play in the silver division where the winner will be declared on gross after strokeplay over 54 holes as in the gold division where players between the age of 15 and 17 will compete. Players in the gold and silver divisions will be eligible to take part in the overall championship for the Sri Lanka Junior Golf title.
Last year Kyle de Silva grossed a score of 219 to win the overall championship above Sachin who aggregated a gross total of 233 points. Zaffar Sikkandar won the silver division with an aggregate of 256 points followed by Prashan Peiris who also finished with 256.
