IPM students excel at Northumbria University
View(s):Nuwandi Jayasuriya and Piumi Samarasiri, who are graduates of the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM), recently completed their BA (hons.) in Leadership and Management degree, offered by the Northumbria University’s international programme, with flying colours; Nuwandi with a First Class and Piumi with a Second Upper.
Talking about their achievements and what led them to pursue a professional qualification, which is offered by the IPM, as well as an academic qualification, offered by the Northumbria, they both agreed that it is a unique combination of professional and academic knowledge and training that will provide them with that extra edge needed in excelling as human resource personnel, which they aspire to be.
Both Nuwandi and Piumi have had experience in the industry working as interns during their time as students. Both, with keen interest in the field of human resource management (HRM), joined the IPM at the foundation level and worked their way up to the professional level. The Foundation Course in HRM (FCHRM), the Certificate Course in HRM (CCHRM), and the Professional Qualification in HRM (PQHRM), are the main programmes offered by the IPM which leads to the grooming of a well rounded human resource manager.
Both students claimed that whilst doing the PQHRM at the IPM, they found out that, at the second level of the PQHRM, or at the completion of it, they can join the Northumbria University’s international programme, offered by the British Management School (BMS), to gain an academic qualification which complements their professional qualification, and also as a next step of their study programme in HRM.
Nuwandi joined the BA programme after completion of all three levels of the PQHRM and Piumi gave a go at it after completing the second level of the PQHRM. And both claim that the knowledge they gained through the IPM PQHRM programme helped immensely at the degree level. They explained that going through the IPM study programme stages, from the FCHRM to CCHRM and finally to PQHRM, which is a professional qualification, helped them in achieving good grades at the final year of the degree, especially as the modules offered in the IPM programmes cover the various important aspects of HRM, including management, marketing, leadership, finance, and strategy.
Upon inquiring as to how they felt doing a degree programme on Leadership and Management after doing several programmes involved in HRM, they both claimed that the various levels of the study programme offered by the IPM subjects related to leadership and management was focused on, and that at the degree level the aspects of leadership and management was covered more broadly; making the degree programme, in a way, an extension of the study programme they attended at the IPM.
Both students claimed, with their internship level work experience in the industry, the sound, well rounded, professional training gained at the IPM, and the knowledge and academic training in HR gained at degree level at Northumbria University, helped in a more practical and mature approach when it came to final year dissertations for the honours degree. Both Nuwandi and Piumi have contributed well to the academic and practical knowledge of HRM management through their dissertations on employee turnover, and implementing job satisfaction; two very relevant areas in HRM which they have tackled well, gaining them these prestigious class honours.
They described the combination of professional and academic study programmes undertaken as the perfect study path for anyone interested in becoming a qualified and knowledgeable HR manager and as the best study path in obtaining a degree from a well recognised international academic body.
