Stocking stuffers on a budget
View(s):At Rs 1000 per gift Shaveen Jeewandara suggests deals for all your loved ones
It’s that time of the year when the magazine team brainstorm for Christmas gift ideas that readers could give loved ones, especially for those last minute shoppers who are on a budget, here are our gift suggestions.
For Dad: What better way to remind dad about his hole in the wallet than to gift him a brand new one! There are decent synthetic ones for Rs. 800. If you want to push on the brands though it’ll take a bit more although if you take the last minute drive to Pettah, you will lay eyes on high- quality synthetics ranging from Rs. 800 – 950, at Bag Point located on the 1st Cross Street.
Ties are an excellent gift choice as well, and ODEL does a good range of slim and normal ties that range from Rs 550 upwards. Elder brother: Cufflinks – the age old tradition of classy gifting that dates back to the 16th Century fashion-savvy King Louis still lives on with places like ODEL dishing out a fabulous range of cufflinks. Whatever description you brother may fit, professional or lady-killer alike, cufflinks are considered a fashion statement that gets the job done. The cufflinks at ODEL range from Rs. 975 upwards and you should be able to find collector designs for the ones who are really into it, but it’s always a better option to play it safe with cufflinks and try to settle for something with less work – the simple classic style.
Tech addicts will find this season to be rewarding as prices tend to be slashed quite conveniently. A trip to Unity Plaza or the stretch along Majestic City will bring you to a plethora of tech-goods that can be bought for Rs. 1000 or less. Lapzone at Bambalapitiya have their pound of laptop cooling pads, headsets and wireless keyboards for a great price, while GMX gaming mice will cost you a bit more than the budget we had in mind. The ones that are priced at Rs.790 – are a good deal from our point of view. Wireless mice can be bought Rs. 450, while the trilingual smart keyboard can be bought for Rs.550.
For mum: While still at Pettah we scout around for Amma-certified goods and to my good fortune, came across a set of smoothie glasses for Rs. 800. Mind you these are of pretty high quality and look way more than what they are priced. A set of six beer mugs can also be purchased at Rs. 800, and a set of four Irish coffee mugs could be purchased at Rs. 650.
Elder sister and Girlfriend: Our round trip to Pettah hasn’t quite seen its end and thus there’s room to shop for the sister. Handbags are a great choice of gift if you know what you’re looking for. Bagpoint at the 1st Cross Street offers an appreciable range that is priced under Rs.1000. Nothing impressive can be expected in the quality department for this price, but handbags aren’t exactly what they used to be – bulk storage for female armour, but rather a fashion item that houses a few necessities. Pretty decent ones can be bought for Rs. 950. wwCostume jewellery is a saviour when the idea juices really aren’t flowing, and once again we shift from one end of the spectrum back to ODEL. At backstage you can find petite silver jewellery ranging from Rs.650-1000.
Watches are another age old gift idea that still has a ring to it. Queens at Pettah are renowned for good timepieces and we came across good Qmax models priced from Rs. 990 upwards.
Worst case scenario? purchase a voucher worth Rs.1000 (Vouchers – at the aid of lazy shoppers since the beginning of time).
This season, it may make sense to hit the streets of Pettah since our tight wallets don’t often leave us in the luxury of malls. Plus, a shopping spree in Pettah can be quite an adventure in itself. Go forth hit the budget hotspots, but remember it’s not always about the cash! Here’s to a great season, Merry Christmas!
